Bugleweed has many common names such as; bugle, blue bugle, bugle herb, bugleweed, carpetweed, carpet bugleweed, and common bugle. It’s an herbaceous flowering plant in the mint family.

Habitat

Bugleweed is a native of Eurasia and commonly found in North America in gardens. The plant grows in damp broadleaved woodlands, typically in shaded places, and damp pastures and meadows. The plant is readily cultivated in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers wet, humus soils with good drainage but tolerates moderately dry ones.

Description

Bugleweed has dark green leaves with purple highlights. It’s an herbaceous flowering plant that grows about 10 to 35 cm high with overground rooting runners sprouting out of the rosette-like basal leaves. The flower stem is actually quadrangular, villous above, and glabrous below. The rest of the plant is glabrous.

The leaves grow 5–8 cm tall, but it sends up 10–15 cm tall flower stalks bearing many purple flowers in the spring.

Part used
