AdWords – the most well-known pay per click advertising platform

AdWords is the most well-known pay-per-click advertising platform. What separates it from other major platforms such as Bing ads, Facebook ads, etc. are two things:

1) It’s built into Google Search Network.

You have to set up your ad once and then that ad will show up across all of Google’s search network properties. That includes sites like YouTube, Gmail, Maps, etc. On the contrary, other platforms have limited coverage. If you want to advertise on multiple platforms you might need to create a separate account for each one. This may be equally costly and time-consuming as it requires constant maintenance. It leads us to point number 2…

2) AdWords has competitive bidding.

It means the price you pay for a click is mostly determined by how much competition there is. This ultimately doesn’t work out in your favor. Other platforms use algorithmic pricing where the system will try to determine the right bid price based on various factors such as quality of ad or historical performance etc. This means that you’re going to have a better chance at getting lower bids and achieving a higher position until competitors take notice and increase their own bids – don’t worry though because this also works both ways.

Whilst other platforms might offer more advanced bidding options AdWords remains relevant. It is because of its strong brand recognition and large pool of advertisers. This makes it one of those rare cases where well known brands can benefit from greater market coverage by spending less than their smaller competitors.

Alright, this is all fine and well but how do you actually get started with AdWords?

First, create your Google AdWords account which will be used to manage your campaign. Once done head over to the adwords website and click on ‘Start advertising’. You can either select ‘Search ads’ or display ads’, both are the same in terms of how they work so if you don’t have a preference go with search ads as it’s what we’ll be using here.

Now, it is the time to consider your keywords – this might sound complex but it can actually be very simple. First, determine what people would type into Google if they were looking for your services (e.g., “web designer London”) and then use a tool like Keyword Planner to help you determine which searches are the most popular. Once done make sure you add your keywords to the ‘Search terms’ box and hit save.

It’s important to note that AdWords will automatically try to include certain words in every ad, such as ‘free’, or ‘buy’. You can also add negative keywords or phrases (e.g., “cheap web designer”) which tell Google not to show your ads alongside any search containing those words. This is especially useful once you start investing in PPC and want to avoid wasting money on clicks from people looking for low priced services (you do actually want to sell high-quality items and services after all). To add negative keywords simply type them in the box provided.

Now, you need to create your ad.

This is where you’ll choose which title, description and display URL should be shown alongside your keyword(s). You can leave all of these as their default settings. But keep in mind that your title needs to be relevant to what you’re advertising. So, it takes some trialing for each campaign to find out what works best. The same applies for the description which should convince Google users why they should click on your ad – you can use up to 25 characters here so don’t be afraid to get creative!

As far as CPC (cost per click) goes this will depend entirely on how much competition there is but roughly speaking figure that if others are bidding $2-5 for a click and you bid $1.80, you’ll go ahead in the auction. Google will charge advertisers who win auctions on a cost-per-click basis, which means that every time anyone clicks on your ad that you run you’ll pay the amount you’ve selected (or lower if another advertiser’s bid is lower than yours). This also applies to other platforms such as Facebook Ads and Twitter Ads, although their pricing models might vary slightly.

It’s important that you don’t spend too much time thinking about CPC because there is only so much that can be done here.

It’s not possible to guarantee a specific position or keyword performance. As a result, the best course of action is to think about what would work best for converting visitors into customers.

In the ‘Device & location’ section, choose which devices should show your ads and where they’ll be targeted. For most campaigns, mobile devices are a complete no-go but if you’re specifically targeting mobile users feel free to unselect all other options. As for location, try to use the most specific area possible (e.g., London rather than just UK) so that Google knows exactly who is seeing your ad and can tailor it accordingly. Finally, hit save and watch your campaign come to life! This doesn’t mean it will work right away though – you’ll need to track everything carefully in order to get an idea of what’s working and what isn’t. This is why analytics tools such as Google Analytics Premium are extremely useful.

If you’re looking for inspiration, the Google Display Network consists of millions of websites across YouTube, Gmail and other sites that all help to promote your products.

That said, if your aim is to sell highly targeted items (e.g., mobile accessories) AdWords might not work for you. Try running a B2B campaign instead which focuses on promoting yourself as an expert in your field. Also remember, regardless how great your PPC campaign is, it will ultimately fail without so so-called ‘offline’ marketing. Good old word-of-mouth still beats online advertising hands down!

And that’s all there is to it! Earlier on we mentioned that AdWords can be a bit of a pain but you’ll soon get the hang of it and spend time learning how to set up your ads in no time. The real challenge is to get people to click on them but as long you’re running relevant campaigns and writing compelling ad texts, this shouldn’t prove too difficult.

To recap: – Create a campaign, ad group and ads (using keywords and relevant titles/descriptions); – Use negative keywords; – Create a budget; – Track the results.
